How adaptive tests work
Adaptive tests use Item Response Theory to adjust question difficulty based on your previous answers. Get a question right and the next one is harder. Get one wrong and the next one is easier. Over 20 to 30 questions, the algorithm converges on your ability level with reasonable precision.
The test is not just measuring correct answers. It is measuring the difficulty level at which you consistently answer correctly. This is a more efficient use of testing time than static tests, which present the same questions regardless of who is taking the test, but it changes the strategic calculus for candidates.
How scoring differs
On adaptive tests, who you face determines your score. Harder questions seen and answered correctly produce higher scores. A candidate who gets 20 out of 30 questions right could score higher than a candidate who got 25 out of 30 right, if the first candidate was answering harder questions.
This matters for interpretation. Raw correct-answer counts on adaptive tests are meaningless without context. Vendor-reported scores usually collapse the difficulty-weighted performance into a percentile or scaled score.
Why you cannot skip on adaptive tests
On most adaptive tests, skipping is treated as a wrong answer. The algorithm then dials difficulty down for the next question, which lowers your potential ceiling. Skipping is therefore a double penalty: you lose the potential correct answer and you lose the chance at harder questions that would raise your score.
On static tests, skipping is often the correct strategic move because you can flag and return. On adaptive tests, never skip. Commit a guess and let the algorithm continue.
On static tests, pace and skip matter
Static tests present the same question sequence regardless of performance. This allows skip-and-return strategy: flag hard questions, bank easier ones, and use remaining time to revisit flagged ones. Candidates who refuse to skip on static tests routinely run out of time on questions they could have solved.
The thirds pacing framework (first third for momentum, middle third for careful work, final third for cleanup) works perfectly on static tests. On adaptive tests, the framework is less useful because you cannot control which questions you see.
Prep strategy differences
For adaptive tests: practice at your upper difficulty ceiling. The algorithm will push you toward that ceiling fast, and you want to be comfortable operating there. Spending hours on easy questions during prep teaches your brain nothing useful for an adaptive environment.
For static tests: practice under tight timing. The static test rewards speed at medium difficulty more than deep accuracy at high difficulty. Build timed rhythm with a realistic mix of question types rather than focusing on your ceiling.
Common adaptive test vendors
SHL Verify G+, SHL Verify Interactive, Talent Q Elements, and Aon cut-e scales are all adaptive. Some Kenexa modules use adaptive scoring as well, though the format varies by specific test.
Most CCAT, Wonderlic, PI Cognitive, and Watson-Glaser formats are static. If your invitation email does not specify, check vendor documentation. The distinction is usually prominent in published materials.
Hybrid formats
A small number of tests use hybrid formats that start adaptive and switch to static, or vice versa. These are rare and usually documented explicitly in vendor materials. If you encounter a hybrid format, default to adaptive strategy (never skip) because the penalty for mistaking an adaptive portion for a static one is larger than the reverse.
