CCAT vs Wonderlic: Nearly the Same Test, Completely Different Employers
If you got a cognitive test invite and the vendor field says "Criteria Corp" or "Wonderlic Inc.," you are looking at one of two tests that are so similar most candidates cannot tell them apart. 50 questions. A brutal time limit. No calculator. No penalty for guessing. Both claim to measure general cognitive ability. But the CCAT gives you 15 minutes and the Wonderlic gives you 12, and that 3-minute gap changes your whole strategy. The employer who sent it also changes everything about what a passing score looks like.

Format: the same skeleton, two different skins
Both tests give you 50 questions in a timed, single-session online format. Both interleave question families so you never know if the next item is an antonym, a word problem, or a number series. Both are closed-calculator. Both let you skip, flag, and return to earlier items if you have time. Mechanically, if you put a CCAT and a Wonderlic next to each other with vendor branding removed, many candidates could not tell which was which for the first 5 questions.
The structural difference is the spatial block. The CCAT formally includes roughly 10 spatial reasoning questions per test: shape rotation, odd-one-out, and pattern matrices. Criteria has treated spatial as a core signal since the test was redesigned in 2012. The Wonderlic does not have a dedicated spatial section. It includes a small number of spatial or geometric items sprinkled among its broader common-sense reasoning questions, but the ratio is much lower, usually 3 to 5 items total. If spatial is your strength, the CCAT is materially easier. If it is your weakness, the Wonderlic is the friendlier test.
The other structural tell is vocabulary density. The Wonderlic leans harder on vocabulary and analogies than the CCAT. A typical Wonderlic includes around 12 vocabulary-style items (antonyms, synonyms, analogies). A CCAT includes closer to 7 or 8, with more weight on short-passage inference. If you are strong on verbal but weaker on math, the Wonderlic favors you slightly. If your math is solid and your vocabulary is shaky, the CCAT is kinder.
Timing: the 3-minute gap is the whole game
The CCAT gives you 18 seconds per question on average. The Wonderlic gives you 14.4 seconds. That 3.6-second gap compounds across 50 questions into an entirely different pacing feel. On the CCAT, you have genuine time to read a word problem twice if you need to. On the Wonderlic, if you read anything twice, you are probably going to run out of clock.
Almost no one finishes either test cleanly. Under 2 percent of Wonderlic candidates answer all 50 correctly inside 12 minutes. Under 1 percent of CCAT candidates do in 15 minutes. The practical target on both tests is not "finish" but "attempt enough high-value questions accurately." For the CCAT, that usually means 42 to 48 attempts with 80 to 85 percent accuracy to hit the top-score bands Vista Equity Partners asks for. For the Wonderlic, 35 to 42 attempts with 85 percent accuracy puts you in middle-management and engineering target ranges.
One counterintuitive implication: the Wonderlic rewards aggressive skipping more than the CCAT does. Because your budget per question is smaller, a single question where you burn 45 seconds can cost you three later questions. CCAT candidates can afford to spend 30 seconds on one hard word problem if the rest of their pace is strong. Wonderlic candidates almost never can.
Question types side by side
Both tests draw from the same deep pool of cognitive assessment items. The proportions differ.
Word problems and arithmetic
The CCAT runs roughly 20 math items: percentages, ratios, work-rate, basic algebra. The Wonderlic runs roughly 20 math items too, with a slightly higher proportion of pure arithmetic versus word problems. Both ban calculators. Mental math fluency is your largest score lever on either.
Vocabulary and verbal reasoning
The CCAT mixes antonyms with passage-based inference (about 20 questions total, roughly half passages, half vocabulary). The Wonderlic front-loads vocabulary: antonyms, synonyms, analogies are around 12 questions with less passage-based reasoning. If you read slow, the Wonderlic is faster for you; if you read fast, the CCAT gives you more room to reason.
Spatial and pattern reasoning
The CCAT includes a formal spatial section, ~10 questions, typically clustered together or interleaved in the back half. The Wonderlic has at most 3 to 5 spatial-adjacent items and does not announce them. This is the biggest content difference between the two tests.
Logic, series, and deduction
Both include number and letter series, simple syllogisms, and conclusion-from-premises items. The Wonderlic relies on these slightly more than the CCAT does. Both reward the same skill: recognizing the pattern family in the first 2 seconds.
Which is actually harder
Raw question difficulty is close, with a slight Wonderlic edge because time pressure compounds. The same word problem is harder in 14 seconds than in 18, even if the math is identical. Most candidates find the Wonderlic feels faster and more anxiety-inducing on the first attempt, while the CCAT feels more content-rich and less panicked.
Criteria Corp and Wonderlic Inc. both publish role-specific percentile cutoffs. Vista Equity portfolio companies commonly require CCAT scores in the 70th to 85th percentile, which maps to raw scores of about 29 to 36 correct. Wonderlic targets for middle management and engineering land at 23 to 32 correct. The scoring bands are not directly comparable, but the difficulty of hitting a "good" score is roughly similar: both require sustained accuracy and aggressive skip discipline.
The deeper difficulty difference is psychological. CCAT candidates know they face a 15-minute grind and can pace accordingly. Wonderlic candidates often underestimate the pacing demand because the test feels familiar (it has been around since 1937), and then get wrecked in minutes 9 through 12 when the compounding kicks in.
Scoring and how employers read it
CCAT scores are reported as a raw score out of 50 plus a percentile versus a large norm group. Criteria Corp publishes role-specific percentile targets: entry-level roles often target the 50th percentile (~24 correct), analyst roles target 70th (~29), management roles target 85th (~36), and high-stakes PE-backed roles push toward 90th or higher. Vista Equity Partners famously holds a hard line at the 85th percentile for most portfolio hires.
Wonderlic scores are reported as raw correct out of 50. The population average is 20. Unskilled labor targets 10 to 12. Clerical targets 17 to 21. Skilled trades target 21 to 24. Middle management and technical roles target 23 to 28. Executive and engineering roles target 27 to 32. NFL quarterbacks historically averaged around 24. The Wonderlic does not publish percentiles the way Criteria does, but the role-based targets function the same way.
Both tests award no penalty for wrong answers, which means the final 10 seconds of either test should be used to blindly fill every remaining blank. This alone is worth 1 to 3 free points on each test, and most candidates forget to do it because time panic eats the last minute.
Who actually uses each
Criteria Corp counts roughly 7,000 employers as clients, with heaviest concentration in Vista Equity Partners portfolio companies, mid-market SaaS, private equity portfolio add-ons, and tech. Crossover, Cvent, Finastra, PowerSchool, and TIBCO are representative. If you are interviewing at a PE-backed SaaS firm and the assessment takes 15 minutes, it is almost certainly the CCAT.
Wonderlic Inc. leans toward high-volume hiring and franchise-heavy retail. Subway, FedEx, Progressive, Geico, and Manpower are standard clients. The NFL used it as a mandatory Combine test from 1970 through 2021 and removed it officially in 2022, though many teams still administer it privately. If you are interviewing in retail, insurance, logistics, or sports adjacency and the assessment takes 12 minutes, it is almost certainly the Wonderlic.
How prep differs between the two
If you have been invited to one specific test, prep only that test. The format tells between CCAT and Wonderlic are small enough that drilling the wrong one costs you 5 to 10 percent accuracy from unfamiliar pacing, even if the content overlaps heavily.
For the CCAT, invest prep time in spatial reasoning drills. This is the highest-leverage area because the Wonderlic-style general prep most candidates find online does not cover spatial items adequately. One evening of deliberate practice on shape rotation and pattern matrices can move 2 to 4 raw points. Also budget heavily for 18-second word-problem pacing, which is the difference between "I could solve this in 45 seconds" and "I got it in time."
For the Wonderlic, invest prep time in vocabulary recognition speed and in explicit skip discipline. The 14.4-second budget does not tolerate any question that takes over 20 seconds without a compensating skip. Drill an SAT-tier antonym list until recognition is reflexive. Run one full 12-minute mock, mark every question that took over 20 seconds, and make those question types your skip candidates next time.
If you might face either (some employers run both at different interview stages), prep the harder one first. 18-second pacing transfers down to 14.4 seconds more reliably than the reverse. Practice the CCAT for content depth and the Wonderlic for final pacing polish in the week before your assessment.

Which one should you actually prep for
If your invite says Criteria Corp or mentions a 15-minute cognitive assessment: prep the CCAT. Budget 7 days, spend the first 2 on spatial drills, the middle 3 on mixed 18-second pacing, and the last 2 on full timed mocks.
If your invite says Wonderlic, WPT, WPT-R, or WonScore or mentions a 12-minute cognitive assessment: prep the Wonderlic. Budget 5 days, spend day 1 on a diagnostic, days 2 and 3 on arithmetic and vocabulary speed, day 4 on skip drills and a full timed mock, day 5 on light review.
If you do not know which test is coming: check the industry. PE-backed SaaS or private equity portfolio company plus 15 minutes means CCAT. Retail, insurance, logistics, or sports plus 12 minutes means Wonderlic. When in doubt, email the recruiter. Nobody is offended by "what test will I be taking," and it saves you a week of prep in the wrong direction.
